[T]ake the notion of “political correctness”. It is true that movements of conscience have piled demands onto people faster than the culture can absorb them. That is an unfortunate side-effect of social progress. Conservatism, however, twists language to make the inconvenience of conscience sound like a kind of oppression. The campaign against political correctness is thus a search-and-destroy campaign against all vestiges of conscience in society. The flamboyant nastiness of rhetors such as Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter represents the destruction of conscience as a type of liberation. They are like cultists, continually egging on their audiences to destroy their own minds by punching through one layer after another of their consciences.

Phil Agre on Political Correctness (via jonathan-cunningham)

Any time someone brings up “well I’m not ‘politically correct’” it calls for a mega-side eye. Because, what? Your desire to say whatever you want however you want to say it trumps the comfort and well-being of the people around you?

(via stfuconservatives)

Quite honestly I don’t see how not being politically correct is a “search-and-destroy campaign against all vestiges of conscience in society.” Speaking one’s mind is not going to destroy “conscience.” Where did any one person get the right to decide that some movements are “movements of conscience” and others aren’t? The anti-abortion movement is a “movement of conscience,” and I don’t see liberals being “politically correct” or in any way censoring their views about that. Whether or not something is a “movement of conscious” is totally subjective, and everyone should have the right in a free country to speak their minds on whether they are for or against a movement.

You might remember a quote said by Howard Zinn that was quite popular on bumper stickers during Bush’s regime: “Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.” Zinn is saying that as a good citizen of the U.S., it’s a matter of duty to pitch your ideas on political issues, whether they fit in with most people’s opinions or not. I agree completely with this. Censoring people by saying that they need to be more politically correct is actually harmful not only to people’s right to free speech but to the view that you are trying to push onto the people. What I mean is that if someone is forced to repress a view within him/herself, that will only make the view grow more intense for him/her.

Also, I think the fear of people making a “search-and-destroy campaign against all vestiges of conscience in society” through being anti-political-correctness comes from the idea that when people are trying to make progress in our country and others oppose them, progress will occur more slowly or stop completely. I think that this idea is completely untrue and that anyone who has this fear just doesn’t give humanity enough credit. We’re all smart enough to think things through and make our own decisions and a loud-mouthed individual like Rush Limbaugh is not going to change that. On the other hand, it’s important to be properly informed on both sides of an issue when making an informed decision on whether you are for or against it. Since “movements of conscience” is a purely subjective term, one should definitely have access to arguments both for and against the movements.

All in all, I don’t see being anti-political-correctness as a ” search-and-destroy campaign against all vestiges of conscience in society.” I see pro-political-correctness as people trying to censor us from learning about all sides of issues and from there, making informed decisions for ourselves.

This is your child before and after one year of exposure to a new street drug knows as “The Animes.” Police forces are still researching the sources of this substance, but it is known to be very addictive and its side effects are nearly irreversible.
Signs that your child may be under the influence of “The Animes” include:
making an account on deviantART.com - While it appears innocent, this website is actually a black market for different types of “The Animes.” It contains the highest concentration of animes abusers worldwide.
changing their typing habits - If your Honors student starts typing sentences that substitute “teh” for “the” or uses asterisks for actions (i.e., *noms on you XD*) or starts adding -chan to the end of names, “The Animes” have most likely gotten to a near-irreversible state that requires years of therapy.
a sudden interest in Top Ramen - In it’s early stages, your child or loved one may request to eat instant ramen noodles up to a few times a week. At this stage, it is still possible to fix some of the damage “The Animes” have caused. However, if they begin using chopsticks with every meal, you may have no choice but to lock them in their room and confiscate all Hot Topic products.
